The Art department hosted a trip to New York, New York yesterday and my friends and I jumped at the opportunity to visit some Japanese shops. I was so caught up on speed walking from place to place that I completely forgot to take pictures, but since I live an hour and a half away from New York, it's nothing to cry over.
Our first (Japanese) shop was Kunikuniya, a three level English/Japanese bookstore that carries the largest selection of Japanese books that I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. Since we only had a few minutes to spend in each shop, I barely had enough time to browse the Japanese selection located in the basement. Browsing through the English section was, quite obviously, a lot faster and I ended up finding an amazing Stumpwork book by Sachiko Morimoto.

The top floor of Kunikuniya has a small Japanese cafe overlooking Bryant Park, the food and drinks were all extremely satisfying and delicious. I devoured a salmon teriyaki, crab and squid bento and purchased a few spicy tuna and smoked salmon onigiri to eat on the go.
Tons of miles and three subway rides later we found ourselves in East Village, NY. We initially wanted to visit a cat cafe located around the restaurant we were going to, but we lost a few hours by getting off on the wrong stop followed by the incorrect directions given to us by locals. Seeing as how we had to meet the rest of the Art department in front of the MoMA in just a few hours, we postponed the cat cafe trip and went straight to Otafuku. If you ever find yourself in this area, I highly recommend this restaurant!
On our way back we realized that we failed to take a single picture during our trip, and so, I present to you a picture of the exhausted Illustration students (I'm on the right):
